Website + IT support

Web designer or IT helpdesk? Know who should support what.

Your website is part of your technology estate, but a web design agency should not become the unofficial helpdesk for every laptop, mailbox, Wi-Fi problem and Microsoft 365 issue. These FAQs explain where 39Design fits, where a managed service provider fits, and why the two should work together.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers, without the jargon.

Should my web designer also be my IT helpdesk?

Usually, no. Your web designer should be responsible for the website, its content, integrations, hosting arrangements and agreed digital services. Day-to-day problems with laptops, Windows, Microsoft 365, printers, networks, Wi-Fi, user accounts, backups and cybersecurity belong with an IT support provider or managed service provider.

Keeping those responsibilities clear gives staff a proper support route and stops important IT incidents being sent to a supplier who may only have access to the website.

Why does 39Design recommend using an MSP for business IT support?

An MSP is designed to support the wider technology environment continuously rather than only responding when a website project needs attention. A good MSP can maintain users, devices, Microsoft 365, networks, servers, security controls, backups, monitoring, documentation and the helpdesk process as one managed service.

39Design therefore recommends that growing businesses have a defined IT support provider instead of expecting a web agency, an internal office administrator or one technically confident employee to handle everything.

What is an MSP?

MSP stands for managed service provider. It is an IT company that takes ongoing responsibility for agreed parts of a business technology environment. Rather than relying entirely on one-off break/fix calls, managed support normally combines a helpdesk, monitoring, maintenance, security, documentation and longer-term technology planning.

For businesses that want a specialist managed IT provider, see 39D Managed IT Support.

What should 39Design support?

39Design should be your route for the website and the digital work we have agreed to manage. That can include website design and development, ecommerce, website hosting, website maintenance, SEO, social media, landing pages, analytics and website-specific integrations.

If a fault is caused by the website, web hosting, DNS records we manage or code we have supplied, it belongs with us. If a user's laptop cannot connect to Wi-Fi or Outlook will not open, that is normally an IT-helpdesk issue.

What should my IT support company or MSP support?

Your IT provider would normally cover the people and technology they use every day: PCs and Macs, Microsoft 365, identity and user accounts, email configuration, networks, Wi-Fi, servers, endpoint security, backups, printers, business applications and general technical support.

39D's managed IT service currently includes unlimited remote IT support, proactive monitoring, Microsoft 365 administration, cybersecurity management, network/server support, documentation and technology planning. View 39D Managed IT Support.

What does unlimited IT helpdesk support mean?

In a managed-support context, unlimited helpdesk normally means users can raise covered support requests without the business worrying that every routine call creates a separate hourly invoice. The exact scope, service hours, exclusions and response targets still depend on the support agreement.

39D offers managed plans with unlimited remote IT support and also operates a 24/7 Service Desk with access to its UK-based helpdesk team. See 39D's 24/7 Service Desk.

Why is a proper helpdesk better than staff contacting different suppliers?

A defined helpdesk gives staff one route for everyday IT problems, creates tickets, records what happened and makes escalation easier. Without that structure, users can end up asking the web designer about Outlook, the phone supplier about Wi-Fi and the office manager about security alerts.

A good MSP can triage the issue first and then work with 39Design or another specialist supplier when the fault genuinely sits outside the IT support scope.

Can 39Design work with our existing MSP or internal IT team?

Yes. In many projects that is the best arrangement. 39Design can work with your existing MSP or internal IT team on DNS changes, email authentication, single sign-on, website security, domain changes, firewall allow-lists, integrations and launch planning.

We do not need to replace a good IT relationship in order to build or manage the website.

Who should manage Microsoft 365 for the business?

For an established business, Microsoft 365 administration is normally better placed with the organisation's IT provider or internal IT team. It involves identities, MFA, licences, mailbox permissions, security policies, devices and potentially SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams—not just the email address shown on the website.

If you do not have an IT provider, 39D Managed IT Support can provide an ongoing support route rather than leaving 365 administration attached to a website project.

Who should investigate a website form that is not delivering email?

It can require both suppliers. 39Design should check whether the website generated the message correctly and whether the form, SMTP/API integration or sending domain is configured properly. The MSP may need to check the receiving mailbox, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace policies, quarantine, connectors, DNS authentication or security filtering.

Clear cooperation is better than either supplier simply saying “it is not our problem”.

Do small businesses really need managed IT support?

Not every microbusiness needs a full managed-service contract, but the need grows quickly once several employees depend on shared email, cloud applications, business data, remote working and cybersecurity controls. The question is less about company size and more about how damaging it would be if users could not work, accounts were compromised or nobody knew who was responsible for recovery.

Can an MSP help with cybersecurity as well as everyday support?

Yes, where cybersecurity is part of the agreed service. Managed IT often provides the operational layer needed to enforce MFA, patch devices, manage endpoint security, protect administrator accounts, monitor systems and make sure users have somewhere to report suspicious activity.
