39Design FAQ

How should my website connect to my business phone system or VoIP?

The website generates the call; the phone platform determines what happens next. Plan the number, routing, queues, reporting and CRM handoff together so enquiries reach the right person.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers, without the jargon.

Can a website connect directly to a VoIP phone system?

Yes in several ways. The simplest is a click-to-call telephone link. More advanced setups can create callback requests, CRM records, notifications or API-driven workflows. The integration should be chosen around the sales/support process rather than technology for its own sake.

What is VoIP?

Voice over IP carries calls using IP networks rather than relying on a traditional analogue phone line at the desk. Modern business systems can provide desk phones, desktop/mobile apps, queues, voicemail, reporting and remote working.

What is a SIP trunk?

A SIP trunk connects a compatible phone system to public telephone networks over IP and carries telephone numbers plus inbound/outbound call capacity. The number of simultaneous calls needed depends on call patterns, not simply staff count.

Can I keep my existing business number when moving to VoIP?

Many UK numbers can be ported, subject to provider, number type and correct account documentation. Do not cancel the old service before the porting plan is confirmed.

Should sales calls go to a queue?

If several people can answer, a queue can reduce missed opportunities and provide reporting. Very small teams may prefer simultaneous ringing or a simple hunt group. Design the call flow around how the team actually works.

Can the phone system show that a call came from the website?

With a dedicated website number or appropriate tracking setup, calls can be attributed to the website or campaign. More advanced integrations can pass call events into a CRM for reporting and follow-up.

Can a phone system help verify suspicious website enquiries?

It can provide a controlled callback process, call recording where lawful and configured, and a business-owned number rather than personal mobiles. Verification still requires staff to use independent trusted contact details when fraud is suspected.

Where should I source numbers and VoIP for a website project?

For UK business telephone numbers and VoIP/SIP options, visit UKDDI.com. 39Design can then make sure the number, click-to-call links and enquiry journey are integrated cleanly into the website.
