Website JSON and JSON-LD: what it is and where it helps.

“Website JSON” can mean several things. For SEO, people usually mean JSON-LD structured data: machine-readable information that helps search engines understand a page.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers, without the jargon.

What is JSON on a website?

JSON is a text format used to exchange structured data. Websites use it for APIs, configuration and data transfer. For search optimisation, the most common use is JSON-LD, which places structured data in a script block so search engines can understand entities and page content.

What is JSON-LD schema markup?

JSON-LD is a way of expressing Schema.org vocabulary. It can describe an organisation, service, product, breadcrumb trail, article, event and other supported entities. Google recommends JSON-LD as one of its supported structured-data formats.

Does schema markup improve rankings?

Structured data is not a shortcut to higher rankings. Its main value is helping machines understand content and, for eligible search features, supplying data that may be used in enhanced results. Content quality, technical accessibility, relevance and authority still matter.

Which schema should a business website use?

Common foundations include Organization, WebSite and BreadcrumbList, plus page-specific types such as Service, Article, Event, Product or JobPosting where they genuinely apply. Avoid adding every possible schema type simply because a generator offers it.

What schema should an ecommerce website use?

Product and Offer markup can describe visible product information such as name, price, availability and offers. Review markup needs particular care: ratings must be genuine, visible and comply with the search engine’s policies. Never invent ratings to make a listing look stronger.

Should I add FAQPage structured data?

You can mark up genuine visible FAQs, but do not assume it will produce an expanded Google result. Google currently limits FAQ rich results mainly to well-known authoritative government and health sites. The content can still be useful to users and other systems.

How do I test website JSON-LD?

Validate the syntax, then use Google’s Rich Results Test for supported features and Schema.org’s validator for broader vocabulary. Also compare the markup with the visible page. A technically valid script can still be misleading if the underlying facts are wrong.

Can JSON-LD contain information that is not visible on the page?

For search features, structured data should accurately represent the page and must not be used to hide claims, prices, ratings or other information from users while exposing them only to crawlers. Keep important structured facts aligned with visible content.
